Another issue was that neither of us spoke French, and few people in the village spoke English. We communicated mostly through sign language and showing them the names of places we wanted to visit in the guide book. For example, we found the hostel we stayed at, La Fayette, by asking the owner of a meat shop, then not following her motioned advice to stay at an expensive hotel.
