What interested me wasn't the old Victorian style homes that had been renovated or kept up over the years. What really interested me was the neighborhoods where the houses weren't nearly as well maintained, where porches were held attached to the houses by poles, where years of neglect and poverty had rendered them into Gothic versions of the majestic Main Street mansions.
